Why Is It Friday So Soon?

We were joined at morning Mass yesterday (6.30 a.m. in case any of you had forgotten!) and at breakfast by Chris, who was teaching in St Peter’s in 2005 when we were last here, and Dominic and Anne-Marie Sutherland both of whom are teachers from Scotland, with Dominic being the driving force behind the St Maurice’s link with Nkhamenya Girls’ School. Chris is doing some work with an organisation out here in Mzuzu this summer while Dominic and Anne-Marie are on holiday and are visiting all the people they know throughout the length and breadth of the country.

Thursday was a pretty busy day with pupils in class, working with groups of Malawian pupils on projects and, in the case of the three girls, spending time with Anne in the primary school interviewing pupils on video. Meanwhile, Eric and Mr Banda (Head Teacher of St Peter’s) completed the last of a successful series of meetings by signing the official Partnership Agreement between the two schools. Arrangements were also initiated for the return visit to Scotland by a party of Malawian staff and pupils next March – we are planning to fund a party of 10 so get your fundraising hats on again!!

During the morning Form 1B were spotted digging a pit behind the science block. On closer investigation, it transpired that this was punishment given to the whole class by the Head Teacher for being noisy – food for thought for the St Matthew’s school behaviour procedures! The whole punishment thing kind of collapsed when we took their photograph, however, as they were all vying to get into the shot wearing their widest smiles!

After lunch, Paul and Ally took a staff training session which was a great success with Malawian and Scottish teachers working closely together to identify priorities which could be addressed by the Malawian staff once we have left and do not necessarily rely on additional resources being made available. Mr Banda has indicated his intention to continue to look at the themes identified with a view to making some of the improvements which had emerged from the initial workshops with staff and pupils which we had carried out earlier in the week. All in all a very successful move into staff development and one which was greatly appreciated by our Malawian colleagues.
We headed off to Mary Martha Orphan Care Centre in mid-afternoon. This centre is located out in the countryside to the south of Mzuzu and the difference between the orphans there and the ones in Mzuzu town is really noticeable because of the poverty and lack of facilities in the countryside. Because we were coming, the 50 or so orphans were supplemented by around another 50 “hangers on” but all of them got some kind of gift, even if it was only a pencil and a sweet. Apparently, after our last visit some of the youngsters had asked the centre volunteers how they could become orphans so that they could get nice presents! Enough to bring a tear to a glass eye, as they say - no wonder Madonna keeps coming back for more!

On the way back from Mary Martha we called in to see Bishop Zuza – a highly hilarious experience because he is the funniest man, has no airs and graces and one of the most infectious laughs in Western civilisation. Unfortunately, he wasn’t wearing his usual brightly coloured (almost Hawaiian) shirts because he was feeling the cold but he was so pleased to see us and provided us all with a welcome drink. The offer off a drink led to two of the most unlikely statements ever made to a Bishop:
Celia – “Can I have an Elephant please?” (It’s a type of beer!)
Jennifer – “Passion please, Bishop” (It’s a flavour of Fanta!)

However, the hilarity caused by these requests was eclipsed by Paul who, in the context of describing our input to this afternoon’s cultural exchange experience (or concert, as it is more commonly known), said to Bishop Zuza “If you fancy a Gay Gordons, Bishop, you know where to come.” Cue much falling about by all and sundry – although we weren’t sure if Bishop Zuza and Fr Chunda were entirely sure what they were laughing at. It’s not often you can say that going to meet a Bishop would be light relief, but it certainly provided us with the perfect antidote to the emotion of spending a couple of hours with the orphans at Mary Martha.

A final word today to the parents of our students – we are really proud to have them here as representatives of St Matthew’s Academy. They have been an absolute credit to themselves, to the school and, of course, to you. We couldn’t have picked a more fantastic group of young people – they have got on so well with each other and with the staff and have conducted themselves so well in everything that they have done that we feel very privileged to be with them.

Tomorrow we head off back to Lilongwe via Galamala village (where Fr Nazarius is from) and should be able to post our blog from Nelly’s Lodge Guest house as long as their internet connection is working. Keep posting comments – and, if there’s anyone out there who is reading but not posting, please do post because all of us really appreciate your comments. Michael D gets very emotional every day when we bring the previous day’s blog and comments back to the house!

Tiwonanenge namachero! (You’ll need to find out for yourselves what it means.)

  1. Hello!

You brought a wee tear to my eye today! And what a fantastic experience you've all had! God Bless the kids at the orphanage.

Michael N will let you know how Andy Murray does today against Roddick! EEK! It'll be a nail biter, I might need a pillow to hide behind!

My sisters (Stephanie and Ashley) and I are all heading off to Lourdes on Sunday by bus!!!!! The Youth for Lourdes team and Fr Jim are joining the Galloway Diocese and the Bishop on their biannual pilgrimage, so we will not get to see you return from your life changing experience! (Michael N knows how bad I am at counting, so I am shirking away from counting heads duties this time lol!) I hope you all have a very safe journey home from Malawi. We will say a wee prayer for you on the bus! Make sure you have a good rest when you get home!

    Lots of Love

  2. Hi Frances

I don't speak Tumbuka this week! You all seem to be having a ball. Keep up the good work, it's a tremendous job you are all doing, and it must be very satisfying as weel as emotional. This will be an experience you won't forget. Your first week is almost over without any mishaps, and I'm quite sure the remainder of your stay will be equally fulfilling. I posted the following comment yesterday, but it seems to have dissappeared, so I thought to post it again for your information. Love you lot's, big bruv

Glad to hear eveythings going well for you and your associates. I noticed that your husband posted his brief comments earlier, but there were certain things he forgot to mention. Not to worry, big bruv will bring you up to date. The damage done after the party on Saturday night should be sorted by the time you get back. John spoke to the vet, and he has been told that there is a hair dye available which should change Benji's hair colour back to normal, although apparently he looks quite cute with pink hair. The broken window in the living room will be as good as new and you won't even notice it. The fact that the police were called shouldn't effect Craig's job, although his subsequent arrest might. Enjoy the rest of your stay, everything's under control here. Love you lot's your big sick bruv.

  4. Hello :]
It's been brilliant reading the daily updates of your adventures. It's really good to hear that all the gifts the school has given to the Orphans has been well appreciated.
Tell Michael that his Gran Taylor is very proud of him and sends her best wishes for the remainder of the trip. Also Michael, you better have not traded my camcorder for a keyring yesterday at the stalls!

  8. Hi Michael N. Good to see your out in front of the class. We are all delighted that you are having a great time but at the the same time we are looking forward to you coming back home. Since this might be the last blog before your birthday, we would like to wish you a very happy birthday and have no objections if your are subjected to a round of "dumps" or even have to run the gauntlet...not that we are suggesting that should happen. Lots of love and best wishes. Mum & Dad

  9. Monire once again,
Doesn't time fly?!? Can't believe you've all been away for so long and will soon be heading back home. It's great to read the blogs and keep up to date with the Mzuzu mob: from Caroline being strangled (not hard enough!), to Michael going for a dip in the 'infested' lake (lovely!), it's all been good to read.
Enjoy Nelly's, and make the most of what time you have left in beautiful Malawi. I'm sure it has been an experience of a lifetime for you all.
Can't wait to see you all, to hear the stories, and see the photos / videos.
    Love, Mags (& Stephen)

  14. Yebo. Muli uli?

You may be interested to know that Tiwonanenge namachero is now the top hit on Google.

Thunder and lightning at lunchtime today but the sun came out at teatime.

Having to get up at some unearthly hour on Sunday morning to deliver four girls to the Lourdes bus.

Good news is I don’t have to watch the tennis any more.

    Have a safe journey home

    Tizamuonana.

  15. Hi Jen and all. Muli Uli? Is that right? Hope so. I'm going to brush up on this before the exchange visit in March! Loved the comment you made to the bishop! So you. Nearly as funny as the time you thought all the M.Ps lived in the House of Commons, like a grown up version of Hogwarts.
I am trying hard not to get all emotional like I usually do but we are just so proud of you. The best feeling as a parent is hearing that you are doing yourself proud out there. Keep it up!
We wondered if the orphan centre tugged at the strings of your tiny metal heart. We bet it did.
Love to everyone and have a safe journey. Loads of love from Mum, Andy, Hannah and Matthew.xxxxx

P.S. The house is undergoing a radical transformation. Feel like I'm in an episode of Changing Rooms. However, I only wish my stairs were more handsome! sad Jane Austen ref!

  17. Hi Celia, I was out on the golf course last night, bagged a few trophies and made a decent attempt at Cinderella’s castle before the rain came on. Had a go at some non-televised tennis, but convinced that a racket is better suited to spaghetti than sport. Remember the advice I gave to WC Dom, the same applies to you. I know you are all anticipating with relish the 6 hour bus journey in a bus with no air conditioning, a bit like Alton towers trip, but you are less likely to break down, it is much cooler and you do not have 43 S2 girls fuelled on Red Bull screaming OMG for the entire journey.

May the road you travel be straight and smooth
And wide enough that your friends can walk beside you.
May your road be lined with fields of green
And the sun shine down on you from skies of cerulean blue.
May there be a cool breeze to ruffle through your hair
And fresh, sweet streams to quench your thirst.

Clearly all of this does not apply to some of us. Edward

  19. Hi thought i would give you a updated from this side of the world. Andy Murray is out!! Johnny Walkers is closing down and the bailey bridge is still going to take a year to be build ( i keep forgetting that when i go to tesco) Craig enjoyed his hot-tub party he found out that steak burgers do not float, Kayley is still trying to be the female in Scotland with the most shoes and handbags. Benji looks out the window whenever your talked about (needless to say that he is never away from the window!!). 21. Alright Mick and everyone =)

Finally got round to leaving a comment - I say that as if I've been busy! I haven't.

Just to say, Mick, we were all wetting ourselves when we heard you fell out your canoe :P. Nah, just joking, we hope your alright!

You haven't missed much, Jed's eagerly waiting your return for a jam or two, I fell off a 25 ft cliff at greta falls (and walked home!), which would never have happened if you, the father of the group, had been there!

Oh and Glastonbury was immense - Springsteen played a blinder.

Bad news about Michael Jackson (excuse the pun).

Celtic haven't signed anyone, but Hartley and Hesselink have left. Andy Murray got to the semis of Wimbledon and lost to Andy Roddick (what a match) and yes, Michael, The Lions are still rubbish!!!!

We're all really proud of you guys. Its great to be part of a school that does so much for Malawi. And seriously, mate, all the boys are as proud as me of you, going out there and doing what you're all doing. Its amazing, well done.

I'll likely comment again soon. Look after yourself, and give give my best wishes to everyone, especially Monica!

    Take care bro,

    Thomas.
